Florida vs. Georgia ‘13

The annual outdoor cocktail party featured two teams ravaged by injuries throughout the season. Both teams entered at 4-3 and coming off byes. Both teams had also lost two in a row. This early November date on a cloudy day featured little wind and mild 73 degree temperatures. Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson had the call for CBS.

It was a very chippy affair, with numerous after-the-whistle activities and fights. The Bulldogs pounced to an early 20-3 lead, but Florida controlled most of the second half. A long drive by Georgia ran out the clock on a 23-20 Bulldogs win.

Gators:

#5 CB Marcus Roberson

–completely locks up R. Wooten, physical from line down the field

–cannot chase down Gurley in open field, dives in vain from poor angle

–squares up Lynch in open field but dives straight down at his feet and whiffs completely. Head down, poor effort.

–weak jam allows Watkins to get around him and beats him by two steps up the sideline. Murray overthrew the ball otherwise it was a TD on Roberson.

–late to react to throw, and a half-assed tackling attempt allows the WR to pick up the first down on 3rd & 22 just before the half. Allows the offense to kill the clock and add a FG. Pathetic effort.

–showed good vision and initial burst on free kick return

–quickly reads the run and knifes across the formation to wrap up Gurley at the line of scrimmage

–playing outside technique but drifts too far in, allows completion to his outside, quickly flips his hips as he breaks to the ball but his feet don’t follow in tune

–matadors a tackle in space that allows the first down that allows Georgia to run the clock out. Another pathetic effort

#14 S Jaylen Watkins

–doesn’t react at all to play action fake, flows quickly to dump pass to Gurley

–frantically trying to align the D on 3rd down. Makes a weak effort on a B-gap blitz and is out of the play, a quick inside release pass to Gurley for the easy long TD–check out the play here on Vine.

-steps in bucket to change direction, gets to Green on run well down the field

–dives at feet from poor angle

–good awareness in layered zone in red zone, turned and ran with correct target in lock step coverage, forced a throwaway by Murray

–late to react to outside cover responsibility, first two steps were forward instead of to the side

–good pursuit angle, sound technique on open field tackle as the last man between runner and end zone

#15 CB Loucheiz Purifoy

–opens hips well on inside technique but has no sense of the ball being thrown underneath

–good quick recognition, textbook outside technique funnels WR to his inside help, breaks on ball quickly

–stands straight up and does nothing as outside rusher on long FG

–gives up too much cushion inside in red zone, was handily beaten on in route but ball was batted down at the line

–stays disciplined & patient in zone in red zone, doesn’t allow underneath receiver to get room to get open

–fights off Gurley stiff arm and pushes him out of bounds on 3rd down to force punt

–nicely conceals his intent and quickly flattens around the edge on a short-side blitz, picks up a safety with a big hit on Murray

#7 LB Ronald Powell

–tries a duck-under move on edge, gets easily pushed away by Gates

–quickly closes on play for good form tackle

–post-whistle activity nearly earns a flag

–badly overruns a play inside, allows Gurley to bounce out for big gain

–getting frustrated as Gates keeps getting into his pads and blocking him out effectively; his own hands keep getting higher up and he takes a baby swing after a snap

–excellent timing on inside blitz, knifes around the RG and then cuts quickly inside the FB. Forces an intentional grounding call

–sidesteps block and wraps up Murray as he tried to break an inside scramble up the field

–overreaches as he attempts to bull rush and is easily thrown aside by Gates

–great edge contain on potential option run, forces the play inside

#67 RG Jon Halapio

–sustains contact as he absorbs bull rush, throws hands up to show he’s not holding at release in end zone

–brilliant play on long pass to #1; sees his assignment pulling away so he goes and flattens the DE on a legal peel-back. Pancake with syrup and whip cream on top

–falls off down block vs. 5-technique, falls down

–strong initial punch gets him the inside shoulder, run follows behind for 1st down

–gets high in stance and juked inside by #47, pressure forces bad throw that should have been picked

–effectively plays cat and mouse with G. Smith as QB rolls out to right, eventually engages & gives a throwing lane. Looked awkward but he got the job done.

–pops up out of his stance & fails to engage the defender on run to his side

–doesn’t read the blitz inside and stays locked up on RDE, allows QB to get crushed after the release

#72 C Jonotthan Harrison

–loses his footing by overextending forward, left leg slides back and he’s trying to block on one knee

–does not raise head after snap and gets quickly beaten to his right

–effectively keeps his left shoulder in the chest of the DT as the play goes to his right, great & proper technique

–gets out to second level quickly but can’t engage with anyone, running very upright

–rises up too high and gets no push on run, though he does stay engaged & prevents his man from closing on the ball

–unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after a run in the 3Q, part of a larger fracas

–stays low in stance and finds correct target in helping Halapio with a bull rush

–strong seal block to his left, gets his shoulders and hips squared and sits with power in his stance

#83 WR Solomon Patton

–runs away from the crease on KR and gets crushed shy of the 20; gets up angry and nearly gets flagged

–good effort to get down the field and block on long catch-and-run by #1

–alligator arms (no pun intended) on shallow cross in red zone

–flagged for personal foul in red zone on failed run play

–waits for ball to get to him on bubble screen instead of going after it; ball winds up bouncing for incompletion. Was not a good throw but Patton has to go get it

–again waits for ball to come to him & shows poor sideline awareness in stepping out of bounds right after catch as he tries to turn it up inside; play nullified by hold

–solid blocking technique on bounce cut run

–drops a low throw on quick screen, took eyes off the ball

–spins off two tackles and lowers shoulder to grind for yards after catch

–good diving effort on poorly thrown ball in end zone

–sets off a brawl by reacting angrily to a horse-collar tackle on a jet sweep
